Frequently Asked Questions
DO I NEED A REFERRAL?
To get your sessions bulk-billed by Medicare, we require a Mental Health Care Plan from your doctor. This will entitle you to an initial 6 sessions and, after review by your doctor, you may be eligible for a further 4 sessions.
Private patients do not need a referral from their GP to attend Psychology 4 Change, but fees do apply.
If your account is to be paid by a third party or you are wishing to obtain rebates for our services (e.g. TAC, WorkCover, Victims of Crime, DVA, etc) you will need to bring along a copy of your referral letter from your GP.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT?
You will be required to fill in a 'Patient Registration Form' when you attend your first appointment. You will also have to complete a ‘consent form’ stating that you have read and agree to the information on this form. Please bring your Mental Health Care Plan (referral) and your Medicare Card, otherwise you may have to pay for the appointment (approx. $130).
WHAT HAPPENS IF I CANCEL AN APPOINTMENT OR FAIL TO ATTEND?
Our SMS reminders are automatically sent out 2 days (48 hours) before your appointment time. Please make sure we have your correct mobile number listed if you wish to receive these appointment reminders.
If you need to cancel or change an appointment, we require 48hrs notice. If you give us less than 48hrs notice, or if you fail to attend your appointment, you will be charged for the cost of your consultation. Medicare and other agencies do not pay for cancellation fees and payment is your responsibility.
This policy is enforced with no exceptions to allow us to continue to be able to offer our bulk-billing service to everyone. If you receive an invoice, dont get frustrated, just bring it along to your psychologist at your next appointment and you can discuss the situation with them. It is up to your psychologist to decide whether the fee will be waivered or whether a payment plan can be organised. As you can appreciate, our practitioners pay for the use of their consulting rooms and if you do not attend your appointment they do not earn any income for the hour.
A simple phone call is also appreciated if you are unable to attend as we often need to fit in clients requiring urgent assistance.
Thank you for your understanding.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT THE APPOINTMENT?
Many therapies last between 6-10 sessions, depending on the severity or complexity of your situation. During your first appointment, we will discuss your current situation, thoughts and feelings and how you ended up where you are today. You may be asked to complete one or more questionnaires to assess your situation more specifically and to provide us with information on which we can gauge your progress over the course of therapy. At the end of the first session, we will discuss your treatment options and discuss your treatment goals.
WILL THE MATERIAL WE DISCUSS REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL?

THIRD PARTY BILLING
Some people are eligible for third party billing (e.g. TAC, WorkCover, Victims of Crime, DVA, their employers, or other agencies). All third-party billing agencies only cover the cost of your consultations if you have a current claim and a written referral from your GP. It is your responsibility to ensure that a current referral, your claim number and billing details are brought to the appointment, otherwise you will be required to pay the bill on the day.
WHAT DO I DO IF MY PRACTITIONER STOPS WORKING AT PSYCHOLOGY 4 CHANGE?
Sometimes things change and practitioners leave for their own reasons - whether it be for their own health, other work or study committments, to have a baby, or simply because private practice wasn't for them. Your file and private details remain with Psychology 4 Change and in these cases, you have several options available:
1) you can continue your treatment with the practitioner if they are able to accommodate you at another location (providing permission to Psychology 4 Change to provide a photocopy of your file to the practitioner)
2) you can continue your treatment at Psychology 4 Change with another practitioner that, with your permission, will have access to your file to continue your treatment
3) you can discuss with your practitioner if there is another practitioner outside of Psychology 4 Change, who would be best to continue your treatment. In this case, you will need to provide permission if you wanted a copy of your file to be transferred to another practitioner.
Our friendly reception staff and your practitioner will be more than happy to assist you through this transition if a change is needed.
Please note that Psychology 4 Change will hold your original file for 7 years (for children, it is until they reach the age of 21), so even if you opted to see your treating practitioner in another location, or even someone outside of our practice, you are always welcome to return to use our service.
